Where did the name Caviar come from?

Contrary to popular belief, the term caviar name does not originate from Russia. (If that is the case, we should be calling it Ikra instead of Caviar.) The terms ‘Caviarie’ and ‘Caviare’ does have its etymological origin from a Turkish term ‘Havyar’. This, in turn, came from an Iranian form Khayah.

The world’s largest supply of caviar is Caspian Sea. Bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran and fed by more than 100 rivers, the Caspian is the largest inland body of water on Earth. The Black Sea is the second leading source.
